The Jets of FBW 32

FBW 32 was the only german wing flying the Tornado in the ECR (electronic combat and reconnaissance) version.

Regarding all the german fighterbomber wings FBW 32 showed the largest variety in norm-, special- and test paintings. As the first Luftwaffe wing, FBW 32 received the grey painting for its Tornados. This happend first 1995 as an ad-hoc operation because the wing (the crews) saw the immediate need for this action due to the medium to high mission profiles in the developing balkan conflikt. Later the new Luftwaffe-wide Norm 95 painting scheme was developed out of this. On some aircraft you will recognize silver markings on the fin and the front of the air intakes. These are the airplanes designated for the Bosnia and Balkan operations which were stationed at the german Combat Wing 1 (CW 1) which was established at the italian airfield Piacenza (home of the italian 50th Stormo, also equipped with Tornado ECR) These silver stripes are made of reflecting material and were intended to help the pilots of the aircraft on the wing of the leading aircraft during night close formation flights to visually "stick", hold contact, to their lead aircraft.

More on the two squadrons of the wing, the 321 Lechfeld Tigers and the 322 Flyingmonsters tried to beat each other regulary with breath taking special paint schemes. Because the Tigers were full members of the NATO Tiger Association they were allowed - whenever not operational restraints opposed it - to paint a Tigerjet for the annual NATO Tiger Meet. To not disadvantage the Flyingmonsters they were allowed to create a Monsterjet every other year.

On wing level every ten years a special painted jet was created for the 30th, 40th and 50th anniversary, and finally for the "last call":

• 1956 - Am 7. Juli treffen die ersten Soldaten der neu geschaffenen Bundeswehr auf dem Lechfeld ein.
• 1958 - Am 22. Juli nimmt das Jagdbombergeschwader 32 seinen Dienst- und Flugbetrieb mit Maschinen vom Typ F-84F Thunderstreak auf.
• 1965 - Die Umrüstung auf die F-104G 'Starfighter' beginnt.
• 1982 - Das Geschwader beginnt mit der Umrüstung auf den IDS Tornado der beim JaboG 32 in der rein konventionellen Rolle geflogen wird.
• 1991 - Ab Mitte Mai beginnt die Erste Staffel auf das neue Flugzeugmuster ECR Tornado umzurüsten, der modernsten und neusten Variante des MRCA Tornado.
• 1995 - Das JaboG 32 verlegt im Rahmen des sich zuspitzenden Balkankonflikts mit 10 Maschinen auf de Stützpunkt Piacenza in Norditalien, und bildet dort zusammen mit dem AG 51 "Immelmann" aus Schleswig das Einsatzgeschwader 1 (EG 1).
• Bis zum Ende dieses Konfliktes, der später im Kosovo Krieg kulminiert, fliegen die Tornados des JaboG 32 über dem ehemaligen Jugoslavien und schreiben deutsche Geschichte duch den ersten Kriegseinsatz (im Auftrag der UN) nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Es werden ca. 236 HARM Raketen verschossen. Kein einziges Flugzeg der NATO wird erfolgreich duch bodengebundene Luftabwehr bekämpft.
• 1999 - Im Juli kehren die Flugzeuge von Piacenza nach Lechfeld zurück.
• 31. März 2013 - Disbanding of FBW 32 in the course of restructuring the german forces.

Der Auftrag des JaboG 32 im Kriegs- und Übungseinsatz ist die Durchführung von Luftkriegsoperationen in der Einsatzrolle ETS/ESM, mit eigenen oder verbündeten Streitkräften unter bündnisgemeinsamer Planung und Operationsführung.

National untersteht das JaboG 32 dem Kommando 1. Luftwaffendivision.
